Identity and Gastronationalism

By Chef Ahmet Özdemir

Gastronationalism describes the way food becomes connected with national identity, political boundaries and cultural ownership. Dishes and products can represent belonging, but they can also become subjects of competition between communities and states.

Food as identity

People use food to express memory, region, language and history. Protected product names, national promotions and culinary tourism can strengthen producers and cultural visibility. Problems arise when complex shared histories are presented as exclusive or when political claims replace evidence.

Shared traditions and responsible communication

Many cuisines develop through migration, trade and neighboring cultures. Similar dishes may have different names, techniques and meanings. Recognizing exchange does not weaken identity; it makes culinary history more accurate.

Restaurants and tourism organizations should use clear sourcing, regional context and respectful language. Culinary heritage can support pride and economic value without dismissing the contributions of others.

Gastronationalism is therefore useful as a critical concept: it helps explain why food debates are often about more than taste.
